Undertoned

Editorial, Branding, Video

Undertoned is a magazine with the intended purpose of helping people along in their fashion journey. By showing examples of what accessories and or textiles are in, with examples. The visual language of the editorial is very inspired by early 2000’s design and internet aesthetics, providing a new yet recognizable take on 2000’s design. Undertone remembers where it comes from while looking towards the future.

The Challenge

Timeline: One month Tools: Adobe Creative Suite

Not everyone is born with a natural sense of style. Fashion is something that develops over time with one's own taste. There are so many people out there who want to learn how to express themselves and have their wardrobe be a representation of who they are. The challenge is, some people do not know where to start and or what is out there to be inspired by. Undertoned is here to help give basic information on what is currently going on in the fashion world and simple tips and tricks that will instantly elevate the fit.

Research/Inspiration

Through this project I wanted to present some which were stylistically new but also familiar. I searched online for digital aesthetics which have dedicated fans to this day. From that research I found freutiger aero and metro. Although they share a name, the two visual styles are extremely different. Beyond visual inspiration, my research included current day trends within the fashion world, from fabrics to the importance of accessories.

Design Exploration

Design Solutions

From the research conducted, I realized that other brands and designers were going back to y2k aesthetics. When doing so many of which would select 1 design type and stay with it. There were nearly no designers blending the different visual styles of the time and so that is what I did. Frutiger metro and aero, liminal spaces, and early 3D design were heavy inspirations. Each individually had their admirers and the pool of fans would overlap, in knowing this I created something new from the old styles.

Reflection

This was an important project in my progression as a designer. It was an opportunity for me to truly step outside my comfort zone and learn how to do new things. I extensively experimented with texture and photo manipulation throughout. The process of putting all of my aesthetic sources of inspiration together was also a very engaging and fun experiment. My obsession with texture is on full display with this project and discovering the different ways to integrate them into the deliverables was something I carry to this day.
